Ann tore the sheet in two, then crumpled the pieces into a ball and tossed it into the small trash bin. It rolled off all of the other crumpled notes and bounced onto the floor.

“Why the hell do you keep doing that, Ann? First you scribble, then you mutter under your breath, then you tear the page in two, then you crumple it up and then you toss it at the trash bin.”

“Sorry, Cheryl. Was I really doing it a lot?”

“There are probably dozens of crumpled sheets in that trash. So many, in fact, that now it’s full and overflowing onto the floor. It’s very annoying!”

Ann sighed. Very annoying indeed! “I was just trying to write a little letter to somebody, is all.”

“Well can you do it a little bit quieter? I’m studying for finals.”

Ann cast a gaze at her best friend Cheryl. She was only sixteen, but very mature for her age. So mature, in fact that her oversexed body and witty charm made her look and sound more like twenty. She also had such keen analytical skills, that many older women actually confided in her for advice about their love lives. It made Cheryl come across as a legal aged leader rather than an underage follower. The thought was front and center in Ann’s mind, and she desperately wanted to ask Cheryl’s advice about Bobby Strauss, but she was afraid of having “I told you sos” being hurled back in her face. For Cheryl had warned Ann, some two years earlier, not to look a gorgeous gift horse in the mouth, and to accept Bobby’s constant invitations to go to dinner, or a movie, or dancing, or just sitting under the stars overlooking a romantic canyon. Ann, however, had brushed him off. And kept on brushing him off until he had gone away to college. Only now, he was back for a two week holiday stay with his parents, and she was desperate to let him know she had made a mistake in not going out with him.

Ann closed her eyes and could see his incredibly handsome face staring back at her. How could she not have known she was in love with him? Cheryl had warned her that she was in denial, and that the glow on her face was due to her heart being entwined so hopelessly around the charming and fun Bobby.

Ann heaved a sigh mindlessly, letting her head rest in the palms of her hands. She had somehow convinced herself a year earlier that she had not been a good match for the buff and hunky high school quarterback football captain. All the other girls, though, were just crazy about Bobby. And all the other girls wanted to get their grubby little paws on him, at any cost, only he was, for some reason, attracted only to Ann.
